Turning lane sought in Oro-Medonte

Sugarbush residents say they are tired of having their safety jeopardized driving to and from their homes on Horseshoe
Valley Road.
The Sugarbush subdivision in Oro-Medonte Township has only one entry at Line 6 from the busy two-lane road with no designated
turning lane. It is also situated at the bottom portion of a steep hill.
"Coming down that hill is really hairy," said Mike Maynard, a resident of Sugarbush Road. "It's a really dangerous
area."
In the last two and a half years, 14 accidents have been reported to police at that intersection, Ralph Hough, deputy mayor
of Oro-Medonte, said, shutting down entry and exit to the subdivision.
Maynard presented a deposition to city council last week, along with a petition with more than 450 signatures, requesting
that the township move the entrance 300 yards east of where it is now to the bottom of the hill. The same petition was presented
to Simcoe County council requesting that right-and left-hand turn lanes be provided on Horseshoe Valley Road at the entry
to Sugarbush.
Oro-Medonte Mayor Harry Hughes said the township's construction of a new entry is dependent on the county providing proper
turning lanes on Horseshoe Valley Road.
"The real problem is the need of a turning lane," Hughes said. "It affects not only Surgarbush residents, but anyone travelling
on Horseshoe Valley Road, especially in the winter."
Hughes expects a report back from the county within a month.
"I know that not only I, but the entire council supports this," Hughes said.

TORONTO — Human remains found in communities north of Toronto on Saturday belong
to the same man, police said Monday.
Homicide investigators with the Ontario Provincial Police said one part of the victim's
body was found in Oro-Medonte Township, Ont., early Saturday morning. On Saturday afternoon, another part of the man's body
was found more than 130 kilometres away in Lake of Bays Township, Ont.
"Both of these discoveries were made by citizens who had been out walking," said Const.
Peter Leon in a news release.
A Toronto autopsy on Monday showed both remains belonged to the same victim, who has not
been identified.
"The OPP wish to advise residents of both of these neighbourhoods that there are no concerns
in regards to public safety," Leon said.

A walk in the woods unearthed a grisly discovery this holiday
weekend.
Human remains were found by someone walking through the woods near Horseshoe
Valley Rd. and the 6th Line of Oro-Medonte Township, just north of Barrie, just after 8 a.m. Saturday.
OPP Const. Peter Leon said an autopsy of the remains will be conducted Sunday
in Toronto at the Centre for Forensic Science.
"The investigation is still in its early stages," he said Saturday. The post-mortem
should determine the cause of the death, the gender of the remains and "approximately how long they've been there," Leon said.
Officers from the OPP's criminal investigation branch, the Barrie OPP crime
unit, the central region forensic identification unit and the central region emergency response team, all have been dispatched
to the area for the investigation.
** the remains were found near the construction site at the end of 6th line in Sugarbush.
